The main reason red spider mites are difficult to eradicate is that their eggs are hidden on the undersides of leaves—applying acaricides only kills the adult mites without controlling the eggs, leading to reinfestation within a week. For long-lasting control of red spider mites, it is essential to use an acaricide that targets eggs and has a prolonged residual effect. The female adult mites of the red spider mite (Tetranychus spp.) exhibit high fecundity, a short egg stage, and strong resistance. Applying fast-acting acaricides alone to control adult mites leaves eggs unaffected, and within 5–8 days, a new generation hatches, causing the red spider mite population to resurge. To suppress an entire generation, it is necessary to apply acaricides with strong ovicidal activity during the egg and larval stages, thereby cutting off the source at its origin.
Spirodiclofen is a non-systemic acaricide that exerts its efficacy through contact and stomach action, providing control against eggs, nymphs, and adult female mites. It inhibits lipid synthesis in pest mites and blocks energy metabolism, showing no cross-resistance with conventional acaricides. It exhibits outstanding ovicidal activity and a long residual effect. Lanfeng Qiaofu 240 g/L spirodiclofen suspension concentrate is registered for the control of citrus red spider mite (Panonychus citri), applied by foliar spraying at a dilution of 4000–5000 times with water, and used at the early stage of mite infestation.
During periods of high spider mite pressure, a combination of "fast-acting acaricide for adult mites + spirodiclofen to interrupt the generation cycle" can be employed: use fast-acting products such as pyridaben to suppress motile adult mites, followed by spirodiclofen to control eggs and subsequent hatching. Applying these two approaches sequentially can hold back a complete generation. Rotate with acaricides of different modes of action to prevent resistance, and avoid application during the flowering period. Always follow the label for specific usage instructions.
